Ian Hobson (piano)

English pianist, conductor and teacher, Ian Hobson, studied piano and organ at the Royal Academy of Music in London, then pursued academic studies at Magdalene College, Cambridge, receiving a BA degree in 1972. Subsequently he studied piano with Claude Frank and harpsichord with Ralph Kirkpatrick at Yale University (USA), receiving DMA in 1978. Among his distinguished teachers were also Sidney Harrison, Ward Davenny and Menahem Pressler. He made his London debut in 1979. Silver medals in the Artur Rubinstein and Vienna—Beethoven competitions preceded a first prize in the 1981 Leeds International Piano Competition.
